MTB routes and navigation
Below you'll find an overview and an interactive map of some of the area's attractions, including some great places to stop for a bite to eat or a drink. It's impossible to list all the beautiful things the area has to offer, so this is just a selection.
You'll also find a large number of permanent MTB routes in the surrounding area. The starting points of these routes are programmed as waypoints in our navigation system, as is the complete route. The routes are also fully mapped out on location. A vignette is required for some routes in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug region, and this vignette is included in the rental price.
All points and routes are pre-programmed into our bicycle navigation system, which you can book as an optional extra. An added benefit of this navigation system is that it's securely attached to your handlebars, so you don't need a universal phone mount that can take a beating on unpaved roads and potentially endanger your expensive smartphone.
The Heuveltjes eatery
Located on the edge of Voorthuizen, opposite the Wilbrinkbos woods, you'll find this little eatery, known for its pancakes and children's playground. It's a wonderful spot on the edge of the woods to relax with a cup of coffee and a treat.
Halte Assel
Enjoy a snack and a drink!
Assel station was originally a train station and is located on the railway line near Radio Kootwijk and Apeldoorn's permanent MTB trail. In 1972, the station was demolished, and it was decided to leave the restaurant there, with a large terrace where you can relax after a long ride.
'T Hilletje
Hotel-Restaurant in Kootwijk. Enjoy excellent accommodation and dining here, or stop for a delicious cup of coffee as a passing cyclist. Located near Radio Kootwijk, it's a quick stop when exploring the Veluwe region.
Staverden Estate
The castle of the smallest town in the Netherlands—perhaps even the world's—with barely 50 inhabitants. A beautiful and stylish estate, surrounded by nature and with its own brasserie where you can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink.
Wilbrinkbos
Just above Voorthuizen lies the Wilbrinkbos, a large wooded estate with a country house, hedgerows, heathland, ponds, and fens.
Speulder and Sprielder forests
A large contiguous forest area with dancing trees, situated on a moraine from the penultimate ice age, with burial mounds of >4000 years old.
The Solse Gat
The Solse Gat is a mysterious place in the heart of the Veluwe. In the ancient forests near Drie, there's a large hole in the middle of it, the Solse Gat. Geologically, the Solse Gat is a relic of the Ice Age. Its name is said to have originated because the Germanic people used it as a place of worship for Sol, their sun god.
Ermelo Heath and Sheepfold
At the edge of the Ermelo Heath stands a beautiful sheepfold whose flock maintains the heath. Be sure to take a look around the visitor building. On the other side of the heath stands a statue commemorating the presence of the Romans and their fort.
Kootwijkerveen
A classic fen nestled between forest and heathland. A truly beautiful spot to visit during a ride.
Kootwijkerzand
The largest sand drift in Europe. View the distant surroundings from the observation tower.
Radio Kootwijk
In the middle of the heath stands this concrete Sphinx; the old Radio Kootwijk transmission building. Be sure to drive past it if you decide to take a walk around Kootwijk.
Fixed MTB routes in the area
The fixed MTB routes can also be ridden without navigation by following the signs with the international MTB sign. The point of the triangle indicates the direction to go.
